Creating an area, bar, column, or line chart
Who is this article for?
Users who want to create visualizations
Reporting authorities, roles, and record access controls restrict data visibility.
Area, Bar, Column, and Line visualizations are designed to show one or many data series in relation to each other over time. These visualizations share many common features and will be described together here. Regardless of the visualization selected the Fields and Options panels will appear on the left of the screen.
Example of a Chart
The Column chart below is an example of an open CAPA (Corrective and Preventive Actions) records counted by “Source.” The chart has been sorted by value, the Legend has been hidden, axis labels are shown, and a Pareto line has been added showing the cumulative percentage of total CAPA records each source type contributes. The chart represents seventy-three records as indicated in the lower right corner.
Chart Fields Options
- Horizontal Axis (Category): This region contains all non-numeric fields from the selected Module (e.g., Title, Departments, etc.). Select one or more fields to display as data series in the chart. Fields are shown in the order they are added but can be rearranged using the up/down arrows to adjust the grouping of values. This axis is the X-axis, except for Bar charts where it is the Y-axis.
- Vertical (Value) Axis: This region contains a default “Count” field along with all other numeric fields from the module (e.g., Number of Causes, Number of Actions, etc.) Select one or more fields to display as values on the chart. By default, value fields are shown side by side, but can also be stacked

- Date Options: Dates are shown in charts using their actual values, but often the most useful display is to group items by week, month, quarter, or year. This can be done simply by putting the cursor over the field and clicking the three-dot menu to select the desired date format.
- Second Axis Display: When selecting multiple numeric fields on the value axis, it may be desirable to plot one of the fields on the second axis (e.g., the Y-axis on the right side of the chart). To do this put the cursor over the field to plot on the second axis and click the second axis icon.
- Average, Mean, Standard Deviation and More: Numeric values are summed by default, but other aggregation methods are also available such as average, mean, standard deviation, and more. To change the default numeric aggregation method put the cursor over the field and click the three-dot menu to select the desired aggregation.
Chart Options Tab
- View Legend: Displays the interactive chart legend. The legend can be used to turn on or off plotting of data series in the chart.
- Axis Labels: Displays axis labels on the sides and bottom.
- Data Labels: Displays values next to each data point.
- Stack X-Axis: Stack multiple X-axis categories into a single element per grouping.
- Smooth (Area & Line only): Softens the transitions between data points to create a more fluid appearance in the plot.
- Sort Legend Alphabetically: Sort the Legend alphabetically, otherwise, the legend is sorted numerically by value.
- Sort Axis Alphabetically: Sorts each element grouping alphabetically on the axis.
- Sort by Value: Sorts each element grouping by total value, with the highest value first.
- Reverse Value Sort: Sorts element groups by total value with the lowest value first.
- Add Pareto Line (Bar & Column only): Used with the “Sort by Value” option, individual values are represented by bars in descending order, and the cumulative total is plotted as a Pareto line. If the “Data Labels” option is enabled, values on the Pareto line show the cumulative percentage.
- Color Palette: Pick from a variety of system color palettes.
- Starting Color: Pick the color that will be used for the first legend item of the chart. The palette will be applied using every other color starting from the selected color.
- Reverse Color Order: Reverses the color order.
