Creating a heatmap
Who is this article for?
Users who want to learn about Heatmaps
Reporting authorities, roles, and record access controls restrict data visibility.
The Heatmap visualization is a graphical representation that uses color-coded tiles to display the distribution and intensity of data values within a two-dimensional matrix. The colors in the heat map correspond to the magnitude of the values, with darker colors representing higher values and lighter colors representing lower values.
Heatmap Fields Tab
- Category Field: This region contains all non-numeric fields from the selected module (e.g., Title, Department, etc.). Select two fields to display in the heatmap matrix. Use the up/down arrows to swap the rows/column positions.
- Date Options: Dates are shown in charts using their actual values, but often the most useful display is to group items by week, month, quarter, or year. This can be done simply by putting the cursor over the field and clicking the three-dot menu to select the desired date format.
- Value Fields: This region contains a default “Count” field along with all other numeric fields from the module (e.g., Hours worked, Number of Injuries, etc.) Select a field to use as the cell value.
- Average, Mean, Standard Deviation, and More: Numeric values are summed by default, but other aggregation methods are also available such as average, mean, standard deviation, and more. To change the default numeric aggregation method put the cursor over the field and click the three-dot menu to select the desired aggregation.
Heatmap Options Tab
- View Legend: Displays the chart legend.
- Axis Labels: Displays axis labels on the sides and bottom.
- Data Labels: Displays values within each cell.
- Color Palette: Pick from a variety of system color palettes.
- Heatmap Color: Pick the color that will be used for the chart. All values will be shades of this color with larger values being darker, and smaller values being lighter.
Example of a Heatmap
The Heatmap shown below is targeting the CAPA (Corrective and Preventive Actions) module filtered by “open” records. Categories displayed are “Significance Level” and “Source” by the value of count. Legend, Axis Label, and Data Labels are shown.
