Creating a pie chart
Who is this article for?
Users who want to learn about pie charts
Reporting authorities, roles, and record access controls restrict data visibility.
The Pie chart visualization is designed to display values in relation to the whole. Pie charts can display two unique data sources as concentric charts, with one data source in the foreground, and the other in the background. Both data sources are interactive. The chart can be modified using the Fields and Options tabs.
Displaying two unique data sources
Even though the pie charts are stacked on top of each other, there is no inherent relationship between the data in the two charts.
Pie Fields Tab
- Category Field: This region contains all non-numeric fields from the selected module (e.g., Title, Department, etc.). Select a maximum of two fields which will display as stacked charts. The first field selected will be foremost on the chart, use the up/down arrows to adjust the front-to-back position of the two data series.
- Value Field: This region contains a default “Count” field along with all other numeric fields from the module (e.g., Hours worked, Number of Injuries, etc.) You may select only one value to display on the chart.
- Average, Mean, Standard Deviation, and More: Numeric values are summed by default, but other aggregation methods are also available such as average, mean, standard deviation, and more. To change the default numeric aggregation method put the cursor over the field and click the three-dot menu to select the desired aggregation.
Pie Options Tab
- View Legend: Displays the chart legend.
- Data Labels: Displays labels next to each pie wedge.
- Color Palette: Pick from a variety of system color palettes.
- Starting Color: Pick the color that will be used for the first legend item of the chart. The palette will be applied using every other color starting from the selected color.
- Reverse Color Order: Reverses the color order.
Example of a Pie Chart
The Pie chart shown below is targeting the General Action Module. The chart displays the count of records by the field “Action Type” with the “General Action” type excluded using a filter. The Chart Legend and Data Labels are displayed in the top right-hand corner of the report.
