Creating filters in a legacy BI report
Who is this article for?
Users who want to create a legacy BI report
Reporting authorities, roles, and record access controls restrict data visibility.
Legacy reports are generated through a third-party tool called JasperSoft. This tool presents an opportunity to create reports that contain child-level information.
Right-side filters
In addition to the main Filters panel, different report Prebuilt and Custom Visualization types, the Other report view offers header-level and child-level filters often referred to as the “right-side” filters because they are on the right side of the screen. These filters are used specifically for advanced filtering of child-level data that is not currently possible using the main Filters panel.
Setting report "AND" and "OR" filters
- Search filters are always applied with “AND” logic. For example, if a search filter is set for
Year Createdis 2024 andStatusis Open, the results will show all open items created in 2024. - Using right-side filters, a Custom Filter Expression can combine the filters to form an "OR" logic. This result would show all open items, regardless of the
Year Created, and all items created in 2024, regardless ofStatus. - To create a Custom Filter Expression, click on the desired field and select
Create Filter. - Once a filter has been defined, it will show up in the right-hand Filters section where a variety of filtering options can be chosen.
- Each filter applied is given a specific letter at the beginning, e.g., when a filter for an Attribute Field is created it will be given a letter, such as A, B, or C.
- By default, multiple filters are linked by "AND".
- Once the expression is defined, any filters not included in the expression are ignored.
- Deleting a filter in the expression prompts a warning.
- The custom filter needs to be deleted before the expression filter.
Right-side Filter Limitations
Notifications that use Threshold-based triggers to determine when a report notification should be sent do not consider any right-side filters.
The count in the bottom right corner of the screen which displays the number of items returned from a search, does not account for right-side filters. This count reflects the number of rows returned, based solely on the main Filter not custom right-hand filter results.
Future Enhancements
Ideagen recognizes that having two different options to apply filters is not ideal. To address this concern, future release plans will incorporate the popular capabilities of the Search bar filters into the main search panel. Once these capabilities are fully incorporated right-side filters will be removed. Ideagen encourages users to use the main search filters as a primary source and the right-side filters for advanced child-level needs.
